Tavistock is a picturesque market town situated
on the River Tavy, adjacent to the Dartmoor National Park and just half an hour
by car from the maritime city of Plymouth.
The town centre benefits from a wide variety of restaurants, shops and
boutiques, at the heart of which is the pannier market; a nest of antiques and
curios. Additional attractions include the Meadowlands Leisure Pool complex, and
the Wharf Arts Centre, which offers a high quality programme of cultural
entertainments, including film and live music.
It is believed that Tavistock stands on the site of an ancient Saxon settlement.
Formal records of the town, however, date back to 974AD, with the founding of a
Benedictine Abbey. The ruins still stand close to Bedford Square, where today's
visitors can find the Tourist Information Centre.
Sir Frances Drake, famed conqueror of the Spanish Armada, was born in Tavistock in 1541. His birthplace was
Crowndale, adjacent to our launch site.
